039 Avoiding Temptation 2/16/18



Listen in while John and Jolene discuss how to deal with the tempations we are all presented with. They give some helpful tips on ways to overcome the temptation and give some recipes as well.

Ways to help avoid those tempations
-Change your relationship with food. View food as the fuel it is
-Be prepared

-Crunchy vegetables like bell peppers or cherry/grape tomatoes
-Eat a small piece of 90+% chocolate melt it down and add a bit of your own sweetener if you need to
-Sweet basil

Recipes
Dark Chocolate Shortbread Cookies
Ingredients (Dark Chocolate Shortbread):
7oz bittersweet dark chocolate (about 70%, I used 4 ounces semisweet and 3 ounces unsweetened)
3 Tbsp butter
1/4 cup cocoa powder
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla (or substitute espresso)
1/8 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp cream of tartar
1/8 tsp salt
Almond Ricotta Cheese Cookies
Ingredients
1/2 cup butter
2/3 cup low carb sweetener or 1/3 cup Pyure all-purpose
1 egg
2/3 cup ricotta cheese
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon almond extract
2 cups almond flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
Icing
2 tablespoons almond milk
1/2 cup powdered low carb sweetener or powdered erythritol
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
Instructions
In a mixing bowl, cream together butter, sweetener, eggs, ricotta cheese, and extracts.
In a separate bowl, combine the almond flour, baking powder, and baking soda.
Add the dry flour mix into the creamed mixture until dough forms.
Drop onto Silpat lined baking sheet using a cookie dough scoop.
Bake 15 to 18 minutes at 350 °F until lightly browned. Place cookies on racks to cool.
Store cookies in the refrigerator.
Icing
Stir almond milk, powdered erythritol, and almond extract until smooth.
Brush or drizzle over cookies to frost.

In this episode you will hear John and Jolene discussing how they are dialing in their macros. They will give you some tips on how to track proactively vs re-actively.

BMR = Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is an estimate of how many calories you’d burn if you were to do nothing but rest for 24 hours. It represents the minimum amount of energy needed to keep your body functioning, including breathing and keeping your heart beating.

Set point = the weight range in which your body is programmed to function optimally. Set point theory holds that one’s body will fight to maintain that weight range.

016 Loopholes in Nutrition Labels 7/19/17



Big Fat Food Fraud by Jeff Scot Philips
Ingredients must be listed in order of quantity on the label. People only look at the top 3-4 ingredients. The food industry started using less sugar, so the consumer would think the produce was more healthy.  However, they are using multiple sweeteners in order to achieve this and keep the taste the same.  Many times the product is sweeter than it started out being.

Food companies create documents that “appear” to be scientific studies.

According to the USDA – Salmon alone can’t be considered health food because it is too high in fat.

The head of the FDA Michael Taylor used to be former VP Monsanto – he and others make all the rules for FDA and USDA

USDA regulates beef, Chicken (peeled eggs) & FDA regulates sea food, eggs and they don’t talk to each other…if both are in a dinner no one regulates because they don’t know who should do it

Natural flavors – this means nothing

Marketing terms – Natural, organic, free range, gluten free, low carb, net carbs & low fat. Society drives this behavior because they jump on the “fad” bandwagon

The ingredients they use to replace the gluten is extremely unhealthy

Replacing red dye with Annatto a plant derivitive – UK has banded this completely, because it is more toxic then the red dye…United States allows this to be used and allows them to promote it as “all natural”

USDA regulations – If you put the word “friendly” after buzz words like Paleo, Low Carb etc it doesn’t REALLY have to follow anything!!
“Weight loss” loss companies (like Weight Watchers) are not required to list accurate portion sizes on their meals!
They used sweeteners, but listed another because the consumer wouldn’t buy it…used splenda instead of stevia, but listed stevia as the ingredient
